How to Measure AI Search Visibility: Methods and Limitations
We have summarized how to measure how often your brand appears in AI answers. This guide explains fixed question sets, three key metrics, and essential limitations you need to know.

One-line summary: AI search visibility is measured by repeatedly asking fixed questions in the same manner and calculating the percentage of times your brand appears (mention), your website link is attached (citation), and the information is correct (accuracy). Since AI answers can change every time, it is more important to look at trends repeated under the same conditions rather than a single result.
Why is measurement difficult?
Search rankings can be confirmed relatively clearly, such as "3rd place" or "7th place." However, AI answers are different.
- The sentences and recommendation lists can change every time the same question is asked.
- Answers may vary depending on user location, conversation history, and login status.
- The way AI answers itself changes when the service is updated.
Therefore, saying "it appeared when I asked today" is closer to an accidental observation than a measurement. For it to be a valid measurement, conditions must be set and repeated.
3 Key Metrics
OLRim views AI search visibility through the following three metrics.
1. Brand Mention Rate
The percentage of AI answers in which your brand name appears.
Brand Mention Rate = (Number of answers mentioning the brand ÷ Number of valid answers) × 100
For example (hypothetical), if the brand appears in 5 out of 20 valid answers, the mention rate is 25%.
2. Owned URL Citation Rate
The percentage of answers where your website address is included in the source list or links.
Owned URL Citation Rate = (Number of answers citing owned URL ÷ Number of valid answers) × 100
Often, the name appears, but the links lead to other blogs or review sites. This is why we track mention rates and citation rates separately.
3. Accurate Citation Rate
The percentage of answers mentioning the brand where the company information or service description is factually correct.
Accurate Citation Rate = (Number of accurately described answers ÷ Number of answers mentioning the brand) × 100
If mentions are high but accuracy is low, it is a signal that old or incorrect information is spreading. In this case, correcting official information should come before trying to increase exposure.
What is a "Valid Answer"?
Cases where the AI makes an error or says "I cannot answer" are excluded from the calculation. Instead, record separately how many cases were excluded and why, as high exclusion rates are meaningful information in themselves.
Creating a Fixed Question Set
The core of measurement is using the same questions every time. This collection of questions is called a fixed question set.
Criteria for choosing questions
- Questions customers would actually ask: Choose questions customers ask, not just questions you want to hear.
- Mix different stages
- Awareness stage: "What is GEO?"
- Comparison stage: "Compare GEO diagnostic tools"
- Decision stage: "Recommend a GEO diagnostic service suitable for small companies"
- Focus on questions without the brand name: If you include the name, like "How is OLRim?", it will almost always be mentioned, making it hard to see true visibility. Keep questions with names separate for accuracy checks.
- Start with 10–30 questions: If there are too many, it is difficult to repeat them consistently.
Version control is important.
If even one question is changed, it cannot be directly compared with previous results. Therefore, label question sets with versions like "v1" or "v2," and start a new version when questions are modified. Comparisons should only be made within the same version.
Recording Format
By keeping thorough records of the following items, you can re-verify or compare results later.
| Item | Example | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Survey Time | 2026-10-16 15:00 | Date and time |
| AI Service/Model | ChatGPT (Search enabled) | Model name if possible |
| Question Set Version | v1 | |
| Question | Recommend GEO diagnostic service for small companies | Original text |
| Brand Mention | Yes / No | |
| Owned URL Citation | Yes / No | |
| Cited URLs | https://... | Full list of sources |
| Accuracy | Correct / Partial Error / Error | Note specific errors in remarks |
| Evaluator/Method | Manual check by manager | Specify method if automated |
| Remarks | Guided with old pricing |
Recording Rules
- If possible, ask in a new chat while logged out (or in a state without history).
- Ask one question per conversation. Previous questions can influence subsequent answers.
- Capture the answer screen or save the original text.
4 Limitations of Measurement
This method is not perfect. The following limitations should be noted when interpreting results.
1. Answers change every time.
AI can produce different answers for the same question. Therefore, reduce the influence of chance by asking each question multiple times or increasing the number of questions.
2. Different users see different answers.
Answers vary by location, language, and conversation history. The result you see is not necessarily the result all customers see.
3. AI can say incorrect things.
The phenomenon where AI plausibly makes up non-factual information is called hallucination. Even if mentioned, the content may be wrong, which is why we track accurate citation rates separately.
4. Services cannot be compared simply.
ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity have different ways of gathering information and update cycles. You should not conclude that "conditions are equal" just because a brand has a higher mention rate in Service A. It is more accurate to look at the trend of changes within each service.
How to Utilize the Results?
| Situation | Meaning | Action to Take |
|---|---|---|
| Low mention & low citation | AI barely knows you exist | Technical audit, reinforce core information |
| High mention & low citation | Name is known, but site is not used as source | Create content that directly answers questions |
| High mention & low accuracy | Incorrect information is spreading | Correct and align official information |
| All high | Good status | Maintain through periodic checks |
Summary
- The basics of measurement are asking fixed questions, in the same way, consistently.
- You must look at mention, citation, and accuracy rates separately to understand the cause of issues.
- Acknowledge limitations and judge by trends rather than a single result.
The design of the survey conducted by OLRim using this method is disclosed in the [Olrim AI Search Visibility Report v1](/blog/olrim-ai-search-visibility-report-v1). If manual recording is burdensome, you can regularly check the same questions using OLRim's AI mention tracking feature.
