GEO / SEO Guide
What is GEO SEO? A Search Optimization Guide for the AI Era
GEO SEO combines Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) with classic Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Beyond ranking in search results, it means preparing content so your brand and pages are cited inside generative answers like ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews.
How SEO and GEO differ
They are not substitutes. AI cannot cite a page that isn't indexed, so SEO remains the foundation and GEO is the layer on top.
| Aspect | Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where you appear | Search result links | Inside AI answers and their cited sources |
| Success metric | Impressions, clicks, rank | Brand mention rate, citations, position in the answer |
| Content shape | Keyword-focused pages | Answer-first paragraphs, tables, FAQ structure |
| Technical | Indexing, sitemaps, internal links | Structured data (JSON-LD), clear factual sentences, crawler access |
5 steps to start GEO SEO
1. Define the questions you want to win
List the exact sentences customers ask AI. The unit is the question, not the keyword.
2. Answer first
Make the first sentence of each paragraph the conclusion. AI quotes whole passages, so the key point must come first.
3. Make facts verifiable
Put numbers, prices and conditions in tables or lists with sources. Well-grounded sentences are cited more often.
4. Add structured data
Mark up meaning with FAQ, Article and Organization JSON-LD so machines can read it.
5. Measure mentions repeatedly
Ask AI the same questions on a schedule and record whether your brand appears and which page is cited.
